In this Dutch spoken English subtitled episode of Follow the Science, the phenomenon of the messiah complex is discussed. The discussion explores the difference between sincere, altruistic motivation and psychological drivers such as narcissism. According to Schippers, the messiah complex is often linked to a double agenda: people seem genuinely driven by ideals such as saving the world or helping others, but their actions are simultaneously driven by deeper desires for power, money, influence or confirmation. A critical look at leadership, ideology and the psychology behind self-proclaimed 'saviors'.
The ‘science of wise interventions’ makes a compelling case for precise psychological interventions that can produce significant benefits and contribute to solving major societal problems (Walton, 2014; Walton & Wilson, 2018). Examples of such interventions are growth mindset, social belonging and life crafting i.e. reflecting on and set goals for important areas of life, aligning these with values and wishes. this video was originally posted to Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdGZ-SvPMhg Despite decades of research into such beneficial interventions, few have reached the general public. In the current presentation I will discuss results of an intervention developed by me and implemented at the Rotterdam School of Management: the life crafting challenge. This intervention was related to a 22% increase in study success and a 22% decrease in drop-out rates (Schippers et al, 2020). The effect was stronger for male and ethnic minority students, closing the performance gaps (Schippers et al, 2015). Moreover, the effect was long lasting: after four years the GPA of students participating in the intervention was higher than the GPA of students not participating. I will discuss possible reasons why few institutions make use of such interventions and why ineffective interventions (e.g., ‘scared straight’) keep being used. Also, I present research that I am currently setting up, using the overview effect combined with a ‘letter to the future’ as ways to engage student with wicked societal problems. Is blaming someone truly helping us to solve a problem? In this conversation with Professor Michaéla Schippers, we explore the psychological impact of blame. What does blaming someone give us? What happens to the person being blamed? Does blame bring us closer to a solution for the problem at hand? Perhaps there’s a better path forward—reconciliation. Reconciliation shifts the focus from assigning blame to rebuilding trust, understanding, and finding common ground. Blame often shuts doors to dialogue and potential solutions, while reconciliation opens them. If we want to solve problems and create lasting change, we must focus on keeping the dialogue open. Only through reconciliation can we pave the way to constructive outcomes and a better future. this conversation on Bitchute | On Rumble
Michaéla Schippers was with her 9-year-old son Mike in the United States, California during an exciting time: Halloween festivities and the 2024 presidential elections. The aim of the visit was Stanford University, and to work on scientific papers with prof. John Ioannidis. While there we recorded two zoom conversations; One about her scientific work, the other one (this one) about what psychological process may have helped the big win for Donald Trump. We describe a boomerang effect, what it is, how it works and how it can work against those in power when pushing a certain narrative too hard. In this interactive recorded lecture, participants enthusiastically started working on Schippers' ideal future triptych. What beautiful dreams and concrete actions came from that! The focus of the lecture is on possible solutions for the major social problems of our time. October 7th Hamas attacked Israel, now Israel is attacking Gaza and the world is appears more divided than ever, in which side to support. Everybody appears to be 'rallying around a flag' if it were and if you don’t like the mayor in Rotterdam refused to do, you get scolded. The Economist oct. 16 headlines "Wartime leaders usually get a popularity bump. Israel’s hasn’t" what is going on, and what happens when the Rally Around the Flag Effect fails. Michaela talks about the rally around the flag effect. March 4 expert on childhood-trauma, dr. Gabor Maté sat down with prince Harry in an online broadcast private session. Maté got severe backlash for doing this, to the point of him having regrets for participating in the event in the first place. Did negative associations with Harry make Maté seem guilty? With this as an example we discuss 'the Halo and the Horns' effect. Get ready for some biblical references and learn why Gabor Maté got scorned for his interview with Prince Harry. Maté told his story of regret last week on the UK based Steven Bartlett Podcast called The Diary Of A CEO. In the podcast Gabor talks about how the UK tabloids coverage of his session with Harry ánd the fact that the session would not be permitted to be made public for fear of legal repercussions, were his main regrets. But the story does not end there. When we go looking for the actual negative stories Gabor mentioned, our search engine turns up zero hits. Have they all been censored away? By the newspapers or by the search engines? One clip did turn up however. That of another UK based podcaster called Stef the Alter Nerd who actually saw the online session between Gabor and Harry and who showed actual newspaper clips in her show, through which a different story appears to be told. A story of both Harry and Gabor apparently discussing the virtues of a psychedelic drug called ayahuasca. Could the backlash on that be the reason for Maté's regret? ' The Halo and the Horns effect' in this interview is explained using the example of the Gabor Maté conversation with Steven Bartlett. Maté is a lifelong specialist in his field, well worth listening to. Was a halo effect affecting our judgement in choosing this example? Harry meanwhile is busy selling his new book. His memoir. Did Harry perhaps arrange the uproar to sell some more copies? Or is that the horns effect affecting our judgement? What do you think? this video on Rumble

Governments often try to modify human behavior. Not always successfully. A perverse incentive is an incentive that has an unintended and undesirable result that is contrary to the intentions of its designers. It is a wide-spread phenomenon in organizations and society at large. For instance rewarding the military-industrial complex for war or the pharmaceutical industry for keeping people sick (an develop medicines to treat the sickness). The just world hypothesis is a positive illusion that the world is fair and that actions lead to positive consequences. this video on Rumble
