In this third conversation with Professor Michaéla Schippers, we delve into a fascinating psychological phenomenon: the fundamental attribution error. This refers to the human tendency to attribute other people's behavior to their personality or intentions, while often underestimating the influence of external circumstances. 

The fundamental attribution error is the tendency to attribute behavior to someone's personality rather than external factors. This bias influences how scientists like John Ioannidis are perceived. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his criticism of lockdowns was praised by skeptics, but his recent study: global estimates of lives and life-years saved by the COVID-19 vaccination 2020 2024, which implies the life-saving impact of vaccines gained him a backlash from the same group.

This demonstrates how science is often judged based on the person behind it, leading to polarization and distorted debates. To evaluate science fairly, it is essential to separate the message from the messenger.

Michaéla Schippers was with her 9-year-old son Mike in the United States, California during an exciting time: Halloween festivities and the 2024 presidential elections. The aim of the visit was Stanford University, and to work on scientific papers with prof. John Ioannidis. 

While there we recorded two zoom conversations; One about her scientific work, the other one about what psychological process may have helped the big win for Donald Trump. A third one (this one) is about the Fundamental Attribution Error.

Michaéla C. Schippers is a Professor of Behaviour and Performance Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam. She holds a PhD in Psychology and focuses on goal setting, team performance, academic performance, ikigai (Which means “purpose in life”), and life goals. Schippers coined the term "life crafting" and collaborated with my husband, Jordan Peterson, on closing the gender and ethnic minority performance gap. Her work has been published in top academic journals and featured in media outlets like CNN and New York Magazine. She has affiliations with Harvard Business School, the Erasmus Center of Study and Career Success, and the Great Citizens Movement.

Cognitive sciences teacher Tjeerd Andringa discusses the question of whether or not you should get accreditation. Accreditation means that you demonstrably comply with the EU rules for (higher) education. This means that you work with learning outcomes: predetermined uniform requirements that pupils and students must meet: therefore hoops they have to jump through.

Of course, students have to demonstrate that they have mastered something, but they also have to learn to think independently and make their own choices about what they do and do not want to do: learn to set their own goals and realize them? Exactly this point led to his cancellation at the University of Groningen.

Earlier this year, Tjeerd Andringa founded the School of Understanding, where students are taught how to think independently. According to Tjeerd, the goal of a new university should be to educate independent thinkers: young people with broad, well-founded opinions who do not always agree with the teachers. And from which you might learn something.

In this interactive lecture, Michaéla Schippers talks in a personal capacity about the importance of scientific freedom, truly independent (scientific) institutes and about the importance of dreaming and writing about the ideal future: “letters to the future”.

In the workshop, participants are challenged to use concrete questions to think about what such an 'ideal university' would look like and participants think about what they could possibly contribute to its realization. With the help of the “Schippers' future triptych” we will think about a concrete first step. People who prefer to think about other forms of education (primary/higher education) or even about the ideal world can also do this. Participants are invited to write their own Letter to the Future. During the lecture a short exercise will be done to stimulate this (Tip: Bring a pen and paper).
